Can you use an HSA or FSA for a GLP-1?

The IRS rules are general: prescribed drugs count, and weight-loss spending counts when it treats a disease a physician diagnosed. Your plan decides what it pays.

The IRS rules that apply

No IRS page we read names GLP-1 medicines. The rules are general ones about prescribed drugs and weight loss.

  • Prescribed medicines count as medical expenses. Apart from insulin, drugs that are not prescribed do not.You can include in medical expenses amounts you pay for prescribed medicines and drugs. A prescribed drug is one that requires a prescription by a doctor for its use by an individual. You can also include amounts you pay for insulin. Limits to know

  • Drugs brought in or shipped from another country generally do not count unless imported legally.In general, you can’t include in your medical expenses the cost of a prescribed drug brought in (or ordered and shipped) from another country.   • HSA money spent on something that does not qualify is taxed and may carry an extra 20% tax.You can receive tax-free distributions from your HSA to pay or be reimbursed for qualified medical expenses you incur after you establish the HSA.
