CVS MinuteClinic review

What it is

MinuteClinic is the walk-in and virtual clinic run inside CVS. Its weight-loss program is a medical visit, not a monthly plan: a MinuteClinic provider checks whether you qualify for a prescription drug and writes one if it fits. Visits happen online or at a clinic [11].

What it prescribes

MinuteClinic limits itself to FDA-approved medicines. Its list names semaglutide, tirzepatide, liraglutide (Saxenda), Contrave and orlistat, in pill or injection form [3]. It states plainly that it does not prescribe compounded GLP-1s or controlled weight-loss drugs such as phentermine [4]. For which brand is approved for what, see approved uses.

What it costs

The online weight-loss consultation costs $29 and needs no subscription [1]. That price covers the consultation only; required lab tests are extra, and the site does not price them [2]. We did not find a published price for follow-up weight-loss visits.

The drug is filled at a pharmacy and billed there. CVS says select GLP-1s can cost as little as $149 without insurance when a manufacturer coupon applies, and copays can be as low as $25 with insurance and a coupon [6]. The fine print says the $149 figure applies to eligible self-pay patients on qualifying doses and is not the cash price [7]. Insurance

MinuteClinic takes some insurance plans for virtual care, including some Medicaid and Medicare plans [10]. The weight-loss page also warns that your plan may not cover the medicine and that your pharmacy may not have it in stock [5]. If your plan needs approval first, read our prior authorization guide.

Signing up and cancelling

There is no membership, so there is nothing to cancel [1]. Once your dose is settled, CVS suggests a visit about once every three months [8]. Between visits it offers nutrition counseling, monitoring and injection training [9].

Where it operates

CVS does not publish a state list for weight-loss prescribing, and it says GLP-1 prescribing may not be available in all states [5].

Safety and regulatory record

We found no FDA warning letter about GLP-1 products addressed to CVS or MinuteClinic. The FDA database does hold a 2023 letter to CVS Health about an eye-drop product, which is unrelated to weight loss [12].

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

MinuteClinic suits people with insurance, or a manufacturer savings card, who want an inexpensive first visit and a prescriber tied to a pharmacy they already use. Look elsewhere if you want one all-in monthly price, need to know follow-up and lab costs before you start, or live somewhere GLP-1 prescribing is not offered.
